Selena (Siqi) Jin is a New York/Beijing-based composer writing music for Film and TV. And also a composer of concert music. In 2022, Selena graduated from Berklee College Of Music and majored in Film Scoring. And she is currently studying at NYU Steinhardt (Screen Scoring major ) for her Graduate degree. She expressed her desire to compose for Cinema early on but decided after listening to Ennio Morricone's score Cinema Paradiso.
Originally from Beijing, China, Selena's musical career began at the age of 3; she started to play piano and studied with Professor Jin Zhang, which was one of the teachers of the famous pianist Lang Lang. Selena grew up deeply influenced by Western, classical music and Film music, Chinese folk music, and Japanese music. In addition, her initial knowledge and experience of the orchestra began with joining the orchestra and playing the baritone horn, winning awards in major primary school orchestra competitions in Beijing, including the Marching band Competition. Later, she attended an international school for middle school; she studied with Chinese pianist Chun Wu. She found her talent, passion, and possibility in music composition during middle school. She decided to go to the Music Conservatory for further study on Composition and theory; she studied Composition with the Chinese contemporary well-known composer Changyuan Liu. At the end of 2013, after three-stage auditions and interviews, She received the best music Conservatory in China— Central Conservatory of Music Middle School's Composition department offer letter. In school, she studied Composition, music theory, Piano, Harmony, ear training, orchestration, and others. In her first year of high school, She was deeply moved by the soundtrack of the movie The Imitation Game at the Cinema. Film music composer Alexandre Desplat inspired and influenced Selena's music and her composer career. Selena decided to apply to Berklee College of Music to pursue her dream of becoming a film composer. She goes to Berklee and majors in Film scoring and Composition; in her third year of college, she decided to focus on Film scoring major.
Her introduction to jazz began with two years of jazz piano study at Berklee, including Jazz/blues, fusion ensemble classes, jazz harmony, and big band arranging courses during her time at the school. She fell in love with jazz; the jazz style was incorporated into her music and profoundly influenced her. She hosted a recital for original Composition For Contemporary Chamber Music, and her Composition work: "Re: Beauty" premiered for the Choreographer Composer Showcase. Later on, Re: Beauty was later selected for the Winter works MainStage Concert (Boston Conservatory) and then performed in March 2020 in Boco's Theatre.
At NYU Steinhardt, she collaborate with student filmmakers with short film projects and everything.
